The Animal in Men

The cover image captures the essence of kindness and transformation, embodying the journey of Ramnath and the impact of his compassion.

Ramnath started for Kasi on foot. On the way, he met Keshav and Karunakar. Both were handicapped, and he took pity on them. He provided them with food and some money as well. After this act of kindness, he proceeded to Kasi, where he performed the rituals he wished to and worshipped at various temples.

During the return journey, Ramnath encountered Keshav once more. A remarkable change had come over Keshav in such a short time; he had become a sanyasi and had gathered a large group of disciples. Keshav did not even raise his head to look at Ramnath, who chose not to remind him of their previous meeting. Instead, Ramnath continued on his way.

A little further down the road, Ramnath saw Karunakar, who stood with folded hands and inquired about his well-being and his visit to Kasi. Despite his difficulties in walking, Karunakar accompanied Ramnath for some distance, showing genuine interest in his journey.

Upon returning home, Ramnath was surrounded by several villagers eager to hear about his journey and stay in Kasi. He recounted his experiences, mentioning Keshav and Karunakar. Among his listeners was the village headman, who remarked, “One can see animal behavior in some human beings. If you give food to a dog once, it will remain loyal to you forever. If you give milk to a cat, it will jump into your lap and lick itself clean, forgetting all about you and the milk you gave it. Keshav is like the cat. Do you want any other proof of some people behaving like animals?”
