The Tantrik Speaks The Truth

Vanacharya of Chitrapur claimed he was not just an astrologer, but also a tantrik. Many accepted his claim as true, including the king, who placed immense trust in him. Whenever a case presented itself for trial, the king would secretly ask Vanacharya, “Can you tell me which party is at fault?” The party indicated by Vanacharya was inevitably punished.
Vanacharya openly reveled in this power, leading to a surge in bribery as people sought to sway his opinions in their favor. This dishonest practice earned him considerable wealth.
The king was soon informed of Vanacharya’s corruption. He summoned him and announced, “One of our courtiers claims another gentleman is corrupt. Can you tell me if the courtier speaks the truth or lies? He should be punished if he is lying.”
“I shall perform a tantrik rite tonight and report back to you in the morning,” replied Vanacharya confidently.
That night, a courtier approached him, saying, “Punditji, I am the one who complained to the king. If your report indicates that I have lied, my life is over!” He then handed Vanacharya a thousand rupees, which Vanacharya accepted with a smile.
The next morning, Vanacharya presented his findings to the king, declaring, “The courtier has spoken the truth.”
“Is that so?” exclaimed the king in surprise. He immediately ordered his guards to arrest Vanacharya and throw him into prison.
“How am I at fault, my lord?” a bewildered Vanacharya inquired.
“You are the gentleman against whom the courtier brought the charge of corruption,” the king calmly replied.
