The Right Answer

The Zamindar of Sandur was looking for someone to manage his household affairs, keep accounts, and supervise the servants. His dewan arranged for announcements to be made in public places, and the drummers spread the news to every corner of the town. As a result, a large number of applicants arrived at the Zamindar’s residence on the specified date and time. To assess their suitability, he decided to test them with a single question: “Imagine that you have fallen into a pit that is ten feet long, ten feet wide, and ten feet deep. What will you do?” Almost all of them responded in unison, “I’ll shout for help!”

However, one applicant stood out from the rest. He posed a counter question: “Is there a ladder in the pit?” The Zamindar replied, “No.” Undeterred, the applicant continued, “Does the fall take place during the day or night?” The Zamindar replied, “That question is not necessary for the correct answer.”

The man persisted, “No, it is very essential. If someone were to fall during the day, they would be blind. If it were not daytime, they would certainly see such a huge pit in front of them. I am not blind, and I won’t fall into the pit.” This unique perspective caught the Zamindar’s attention.

The Zamindar was quite satisfied with the applicant’s reasoning and decided to appoint him immediately. In choosing this unconventional thinker, the Zamindar recognized the importance of critical thinking and problem-solving in managing his household affairs.
