The Scholar’s Kindness

Suresh, the only son of Mahesh Chandra from Gawarpur, had successfully completed his studies, but he struggled to find any employment. As days passed, the young man grew increasingly bored. His father, Mahesh Chandra, never tired of giving him hope despite the circumstances.

One day, while on their way to a relative’s house, the father and son met Ram Sharma, a well-known scholar and a retired courtier of the king. “How are you, Mahesh?” Ram Sharma asked, noticing Mahesh bowing to him.

“I am well, thanks to the blessings of well-wishers like you. However, my misfortune is that my son remains unemployed despite his merit. There was a time when just a word from you could have secured him a government job. The king held you in great esteem. Alas, times have changed. How I wish that my son had qualified a few years ago!” Mahesh Chandra lamented.

Ram Sharma nodded in understanding but said nothing. Remarkably, the very next week, Suresh was informed of his appointment to a suitable post in the royal court.

“I expected this,” Mahesh Chandra told his son. “Having known Sharma, I was almost sure he would prove that the king still holds him in esteem even after his retirement, and that his recommendation would not go unrecognized!”
