Testing the Trusted

Vikash worked as a clerk in a small shop owned by Shivsen. One day, Shivsen expressed his regret, saying, “Vikash, I feel bad because I am unable to pay you the salary you deserve. Bhushan Seth, the moneylender, is in need of a trusted assistant. He’ll pay a better salary and has requested me to recommend someone.” Although Vikash was not keen to change masters, he felt obliged to follow his well-wisher’s advice.

Vikash went to meet Bhushan Seth, who scrutinized him with piercing eyes. “Young man, I have to pay a hundred rupees to Shivsen. Will you please go and deliver it to him?” he asked. “I shall gladly do so,” replied Vikash.

Upon returning an hour later, Bhushan Seth inquired, “Did you give him the hundred?” “Yes, sir,” Vikash answered. “Look here, I put an extra rupee in that packet,” Bhushan disclosed. Vikash explained, “I didn’t count the money in your presence because that would imply a lack of trust in you. However, I counted it before handing over the amount to Shivsen and took out the extra rupee.”

“Where is that rupee?” Bhushan demanded. “I kept it as payment for my labor as your courier,” Vikash replied. “But you’re supposed to be employed by me!” protested Bhushan. Vikash countered, “My boss mentioned that you wanted a man who could be trusted. You also indicated trust in my boss’s judgment for selecting the right person. But your actions suggest that you neither trust me nor the man who recommended me. Therefore, I’m not accepting the job,” he declared, and he walked away.
