The Difference

Chandangram was a prosperous village. Bhimdas and Mohan Rao were two grocers who had their shops facing each other. Both shopkeepers were known to be honest, ensuring that their prices were fair and that they never sold adulterated goods. Their businesses thrived, and whenever one lacked an item, he would direct the customer to the other’s shop.
When Mohan Rao passed away, his sons were uninterested in running the shop. Bhimdas took the initiative to ask his nephew, Samardas, to take over and continue the trade. Initially, customers flocked to Samardas’s shop, just as they had during Mohan Rao’s time. However, over time, the number of customers began to dwindle.
One day, filled with confusion, Samardas approached Bhimdas. “Uncle, I’m as honest as Mohan Rao. But why do I have fewer customers?” he asked. Bhimdas had been observing Samardas’s methods and was ready to share his insights. “My son, I’ve noticed how you weigh the items. You start with a large quantity and then remove some until it balances. I do the opposite; I start with less and add more. Customers prefer to see their quantity increase rather than decrease, even though the final weight is the same!”
Taking Bhimdas’s advice to heart, Samardas changed his weighing technique. Before long, he noticed a marked increase in customers visiting his shop. His newfound approach not only improved his sales but also restored his confidence as a grocer in the village.
