The Honest One

The villagers were worried because there had been no rain for an extended period. Their crops were wilting, and the threat of drought loomed over them, casting a shadow of despair across the land.
Just when hope seemed lost, a false hermit arrived in the village. He claimed to have the power to bring down rain and the villagers eagerly sought his assistance.
“I can perform a Yajna that will bring down rain, but only if all the honest men contribute to the fund necessary for the ritual,” the false hermit asserted. Trusting his words, the villagers gathered their resources and contributed to the fund.
The Yajna was performed with great ceremony, but despite their efforts, not a single cloud appeared in the sky. Disappointment filled the air as the villagers faced the grim reality of their situation.
“I asked contributions from honest men,” the hermit declared. “Evidently, you fellows are not honest. What can I do? I must leave, as I am not accustomed to living among such people.” With that, he departed, taking with him the greater part of the unspent fund, leaving the villagers with their shattered hopes.
