The Giant and the Pilgrims

Some pilgrims were traveling toward Varanasi. Feeling exhausted, they decided to rest under a tree in a secluded area.

Suddenly, a giant appeared before them. “You are pilgrims, are you not? Surely, you must possess compassion for one another. Let me see. One of you must volunteer to come forward to be eaten. If no one steps forward, I will consume all of you!”

Each pilgrim thought that someone else would take the initiative to save them. However, nobody stepped forward, and the giant proclaimed, “I will eat all of you, one by one.” Panic spread among the group, and they began to cry and whimper in fear.

Just then, one member of the party, Sushil, who had fallen behind, arrived at the scene. Upon learning of the dire situation, he approached the giant and said, “Here I am. You may eat me and spare the rest.”

The giant seized Sushil and lifted him high into the air. However, he then exclaimed, “My brave friend, your nobility is commendable. For your sake, I will not harm anyone!” With that, he let Sushil go and strode away, laughing heartily.
