Company of the Blessed

“Viswamitra, I’m lucky to have met you. It is a great privilege to be in the company of the holy,” said Sage Vashistha. He then added, “You are rarely seen.”

“Yes, I have no time to waste. I devote all my time to austerity and penance,” replied Viswamitra.

“That’s fine. But you should not deprive us of your company. Your presence will benefit people,” observed Vashistha.

“I don’t believe in such things. The only thing that brings any benefit is penance,” rebutted Viswamitra.

The two sages argued at length but could not reach any agreement. The question they grappled with was whether the benefit of being in the company of blessed souls outweighed the results of severe penance.

In search of an answer, they decided to consult Lord Vishnu. “You can get the right answer to your question from Mahasesha,” said the Lord.

Mahasesha is the great serpent who holds the Earth on his head. The sages approached him and posed their question. He responded, “Would one of you relieve me of my burden for a while? I can then calmly reflect on your question and provide you an answer.”

Viswamitra stepped forward to assist for a moment, but grimaced as he felt he would be crushed under the weight. Vashistha quickly came to his rescue, effortlessly supporting the Earth.

Mahasesha thanked Vashistha and took back his burden. “You have got the answer, haven’t you?” he asked with a smile. “Vashistha’s power, obtained through good company, could bear this great burden!”

“But I, too, held it for a moment; then it became imbalanced…” murmured Viswamitra.

“Let me tell you a secret. You could hold the Earth for a moment because of the strength you received from Vashistha’s company!” explained Mahasesha.
