The Last Word

Three young girls met in the park. They were daughters of well-to-do families, no doubt. However, they were prouder than their wealth would let them be.
“The other day, my mother was washing her gold necklaces in fresh milk,” one of them began.
Interrupting her, another said, “Your mother cleanses her gold in milk? My mother cleanses hers in butter!” replied the second girl.
“How does your mother cleanse her ornaments?” the two girls asked the third one.
“Well,” said the third girl, “she does not cleanse them at all!”
“Then?” the others inquired, intrigued.
“Well, as for her diamonds, she gives them away to her servants once they begin to look soiled. And regarding her gold items, she simply throws them away!” was her unexpected reply.
