A Wise Selection

Natwar belonged to Rangpur, the largest village in the kingdom of Surajnagar. He had earned a notorious reputation for inciting quarrels among the villagers. “Don’t worry, I will advise you on how to proceed in the matter,” he would say to each of the feuding parties privately, often encouraging them to take their disputes to court.

The leading villagers sought counsel from Sadhu Singh, an honest and widely respected landlord. “Well, elect Natwar by all means!” he advised. The villagers were taken aback. “What! Natwar of all people?” they exclaimed in disbelief.

“Yes, we must send Natwar to the council. This will do our village much good!” Sadhu Singh asserted confidently. The villagers, having great faith in Sadhu Singh, reluctantly agreed and sent Natwar to the council.

Within a few months, they began to see the benefits of Natwar’s absence from the village. There were no quarrels, and no new cases went to court. Peace prevailed in Rangpur after many years of strife.
