The Infallible

Aditya, the Prime Minister of King Bharat Dev, had grown old and desired to retire. The king requested him to appoint someone to that high post according to his own choice.

Aditya conducted interviews with a number of young nobles and found two of them excelling beyond all others in many respects. He led the two candidates into a room, where a gold-studded chair awaited them.

“Young men, I found both of you highly qualified and almost perfect in every respect. A minister ought to be infallible. Who among you thinks himself to be infallible? Please occupy the chair,” said Aditya.

One of the two young men immediately rushed to occupy the chair. Aditya, however, interjected, “A minister ought to be infallible, but he should not think he is infallible.” With that, he appointed the other young man to the post!
