The Smart Boss

The office had a new boss. “I will accept no excuses from any idler or slacker!” he announced emphatically three times within his very first hour in the office.
Ten minutes after the lunch break, he stormed out of his cabin and confronted an elderly man who was standing in the corridor, chewing betel. “Look here, man, what’s your salary?” he demanded.
“Only two hundred fifty rupees, Sir,” replied the man.
“Now, here’s your salary for the month. Now, be gone,” said the boss, holding open the door.
The man gave a salute and left. “I wanted to set an example. Ten minutes past lunch hour, and he was still loitering in the corridor!” the boss proudly told his deputy upon returning to his cabin.
“Excuse me, sir, but he was a messenger from another office. He was waiting to carry a reply from ours!” informed the deputy officer, shattering the boss’s moment of triumph.
